2010 Irish Chess Championships

This website is dedicated to having some coverage of the Irish Championships in order to promote the event and inform the chess public about proceedings.

There will possibly be some/limited coverage of this year's event by the defending Champion and number three seed, Colm Daly but it is uncertain how extensive this will be. In previous year's Colm Daly had approached the ICU through the tournament director of the 2007 Championships with an Open Ended Offer through an email sent at the time, which is self explanatory. This is available in the original form of an Open Letter.

In case there is anyone else interested in making use of this offer, a user name and password for any budding editor who would like to report on the event [The tournament director having full and final editorial say on what is published] can be made available.

Some of the games played so far are now available [to view online and download] mainly from the official ICU/Mark Orr website. I too will be happy to publish these games if people send them to me in PGN format. I will be putting up my own games with some notes as and when I have the chance/time. Now available are my games against Orr and Lopez.

Of course it is understandable that people playing in the event have far more things to be doing other than sending in their games when there really should be someone doing this for every round as a matter of standard practice, so it would be understandable if people want to wait till after the tournament to send in their games.

Alex Lopez Wins 2010 Irish Championships With A Round To Spare

After a dramatic round eight at the 2010 Irish Championships that seen Alex Lopez defeat John Redmond and so assure himself of at least joint first Alex Lopez then drew with Stephen Brady in round nine to emerge as the outright winner. The young Corkonian was a most deserving winner of the event and will now also be representing Ireland for the first time at an Olympiad when he joins the Irish team due to participate at the 2010 Chess Olympiad being held in Russia later this year. There will be extensive multimedia coverage and chess analysis and commentary of the Irish Championships at www.irishchesschampionships.com over the next few weeks/days.

A provisional list of PARTICIPANTS for the 2010 event is now available. Previous Irish Championships coverage is also available below:

Despite spending most of my time puking up yesterday during my game and after, I managed to get some footage of the play from the top boards which hopefully give some sense of the tournament. Full reports yet to come as I am not in great shape just at the moment.
