Round 1

No surprises and no draws either. I made a mess of my start by arriving 55 minutes late, however I made the time back and got an advantage on the board and the clock only to go astray and towards the time scramble made a mistake that allowed Gordon make things very complicated. I feared I was worse but in any event Gordon went wrong and I just took my chances.

Mark Orr got into difficulties in the middlegame but when Simon Jeffares failed to take a couple of big chances he found himself going into an ending in which he was gradually worn down by the experience and persistence of the second seed.

Stephen Brady had a difficult game and in a complicated position in the time scramble he played actively and cleverly to create too many problems for Martin Crichton to solve. Phillip Short had the worse of things but in the complications was able to outplay John Kennedy without too many problems.Mel O Cinneide had a fairly easy looking win, as did Gerry O Connell who had an extra pawn in the endgame.

The only other game of note was the win by Karl McPhillips who defeated Tony Fox in a game that had chances for both players at different stages.

Colm Daly 1 0 Gordon Freeman
Simon Jeffares 0 1 Mark Orr
Stephen Brady 1 0 Martin Crichton
John Kennedy 0 1 Phillip Short
Mel O Cinneide 1 0 Brian Beckett
Richard O Donovan 0 1 Eamon Keogh
Gerry O Connell 1 0 Eric Bennett
Karl McPhillips 1 0 Tony Fox
