Round 1

The first round did not have too much by way of surprises, save for the defeat of Eamon Keogh by Gearoidin Ui Laighleis when a few hundred points rating difference had little bearing on the result. It was a loss taken well as somewhere in the middle of it there was a big outburst of laughter from Eamon and soon after a resignaton. Smiles all around and a quick retreat to the bar.

The only other drama of note was when David Salter was awarded a win after his opponents mobile phone went off. Abul Kalama wont forget this rule about mobile phones in a hurry.

On the chess board I hope that I might be forgiven for saying that my own game was rather a nice little one, with a funny finish to my game which was a good example of Queen and Knight dominating over Queen and Bishop in an endgame. Life was always going to a bit duller when you have a pairing of a Queen and a Bishop compared to Queen and a galliant Knight who are bound to have a lot more fun together and far be more potent!

The playing hall is not very good because as has been said, "it is like a sauna in there" In fairness this was not the room booked but there was some problem with the lighting for the room originally booked. The net result is that the heat is very tough and there is little space at the board which is a bit annoying. It makes it awkward to get in and out and it feels cramped.

The games from this round are now publicly available for download as pgn files.
