Round 6 The game between Stuart Conquest and Brian Kelly was a curious affair in which White was determined to play for a win, first refusing a repetition on move 5 (understandable) and then later in a worse position on move 35. Thereafter Brian had the only winning chances and calmly proceeded to make the most of his extra pawn. John Redmond lost after he made a “strategic error” though I am not sure exactly what he meant by that. Either way it was a disappointing result because John has clearly shown he can get all manner of results and even a draw might have set him up for a strong finish to his tournament. Another frustrating result was the game Between Stephen Brady and the number one seed Eduard Rozentalis. The opening was odd and Black seemed to be equal quite quickly, however Stephen could and should have been easily able to hold the position and make a draw fairly comfortably but instead he inexplicably blundered when he allowed Nf5 attacking his queen and d pawn. The rest was just remorseless technique by an accomplished and experienced GM. As I had been saying in a recent blog about Stephen it was bloody annoying to think there was virtually no chance of him doing that against me! The way Gerry O Connell lost to a clearly inform Phillip Short was also a little surprising as he seemed to fold very compliantly and without the sort of fight you would normally expect of Gerry. Nick Pert also dispatched Gavin Wall fairly impressively too, while Eamon Keogh had a nice finish against Peter Cafolla after he had sacrificed the exchange and then a rook sac that caused immediate resignation. The highlight of the round in chess terms was the exquisite end to the game between Mark Hebden and Tony Fox which offered a beautiful theme that sees the power of the King as an attacking piece. Below are clips from round six which show Brian Kelly defeating Stuart Conquest and in the second very short clip, just some footage of the playing hall and the players in action. Sorry for the blooper with the clip of the game wth Brian and Stuart but apparently my nephew (IN HIS TWENTIES btw) while playing around with video editing decided to have a bit of a laugh when he inserted a very short clip of an an attractive lady dancing to some pretty groovy music slap bang in the middle of the clip of Brian and Stuart playing. I was only informed of this during my round seven game. After my intial fright and alarm of imagining the worst I was reliefed to see it was tame enough and have decided to leave it in! I do see the humour in it. after all . As for the full length version of the exotic dancer and her gyrations? Eh? Send an email request and we will see what we can do! Oh and as a minor postscript, in case there are any crazy people who would object to this 9 second clip being here? (It was mentioned to me as a possibility after the last round, as some will try anything to be offended) Then there are maybe three options? First send in a complaint to the email address info@irishchesschampionships.com Second option is not to visit this tournament website or block access to your children if that is your concern. The third option is to take a look at MTV sometime, or maybe a clip of well I dont know... Britney Spears, Chris Aguilerra or some such like and then reflect upon the first two options again or just have a cup of tea and relax! Click on the photos above to view the picture gallery.
