Round 7

Today saw some curious games but none more so than what happened between Mark Orr and Phillip Short. The game, as can perhaps be seen from the little clip below, was comfortably moving towards a draw when in an amusing and bold move Mark tried to emulate the more extreme suicidal self destruct tendencies of Colm Daly and fearlessly grabbed a pawn in a vain attempt to win a rook and pawn endgame. The result of which can be guessed at.

Below is the position that resulted from the play. I wonder can you guess Whites next move after Black has just captured the White pawn that was on g4?

Then there was Brian Kelly hanging on for a draw despite the best efforts of his opponent to try grind a win out of a very close position. He leads the event with just 2 rounds to go.

Also of interest was the flashy end to the game between Stephen Jessel and Stuart Conquest which may give a wrong impression, as it seems White had an advantage earlier but allowed Black to become active and then pounce with a dramatic tactical flourish.

After ... Rxa3 White resigned
