Welcome to the Homepage of the 2008 Irish Open Chess Championships

The 2008 Irish Open Championships are being held in the Academy Plaza Hotel, Dublin during the first week of July. The event has again attracted substantial sponsorship from Island Oil & Gas plc and participation is open to all. The most significant feature of this event is that the highest placed Irish player will be declared Irish champion.

This years Open event has so far attracted a few GMs and a couple of IMs, with last years joint winner Mark Hebden set to defend his Irish Open Champion title against the likes of Alon Greenfeld, Alexander Baburin, Stuart Conquest, Algimantas Butnorius. .

It should be a very competitive and exciting tournament. A program with information on the full list of events is below.

2008 Championships Preview  by ???

This website is dedicated to having some coverage of the Irish Chess Championships in order to promote the event and inform the chess public, or those who might be interested in the event, of all details and proceedings throughout the nine days of this chess festival.

Last year I had approached the ICU through the tournament director of the 2007 Championships with an Open Ended Offer through an email I sent which is self explanatory. I now give this as an Open Letter.

In case there is anyone interested in making use of this offer. I would be happy to provide a user name and password for any budding editor who would like to report on the event [The ICU and or the tournament director have full and final editorial say on what is published].

Last year I personally tried to cover the event but owing to the fact that I was actually playing in the event I was not able to give the right amount of time to either playing or reporting properly. This year if I do decide to play then I simply would not be willing to provide any reports during the event, though I would consider publishing a report after the event, when enough time has elapsed for proper reflection and time to edit properely all video, pictures and text.

Multimedia reports from the 2007 event which includes Video, Pictures and Games plus opinion and comment is available at http://www.irishchesschampionships.com/2007
