Round 6 ![]() Today saw more interesting games, with my own game against Phillip Short being the last to finish and it was a classic Ruy Lopez game with a piece or pawn only first being exchanged on move 34! I ground out a win on move sixty something but it was a tough old game, but ejoyable to have such a battle with Phillip again. He had beat me in the 2005 Galway Open with this same system, while I had fluked a win in 2003 in the actual "Old Irish Championships" so it was good to continue on our opening debate in a long time session. Meanwhile on the top boards, Alon Greenfeld showed some class with an impressive win with Black against Algimantas Butnorius while Alexander Baburin resourcefully and skillfully turned around what looked to be a lost position [Actually just much worse if White had played 29 Qf3- Or is it really winning?] against the defending champion Mark Hebden and looks set to win the event at least jointly with Alon Greenfeld. Crucially both pf these players have already played almost all of their main rivals so far, so unless there is an upset in the last three rounds you would have to figure it will be seeds one and two as first place? Thereafter it is still not so sure just yet. Stephen Jessel also turned around his game against Gerry O Connell to earn the chance to play Alexander Baburin with Black tomorrow, so that will be a very tough test indeed. The games from this round are now thankfully available. for download as pgn files Also See games section for an idea of how this round developed.
